New York Mets - Overview (2024)

  • FranciscoAlvarez

    NYM Catcher #4

Francisco Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a solo homer on Saturday in the Mets’ one-sided defeat at the hands of the Cubs.

Alvarez supplied New York’s lone run in a blowout loss at Wrigley Field by taking Chicago starter Jameson Taillon deep in the fifth inning for his third round-tripper of the year. It was his second consecutive game with a homer after going without one in nine straight contests after returning from the injured list back on June 11. He hasn’t hit for a ton of power, but he’s batting an impressive .364 (12-for-33) with two homers and eight RBI this month.

  • TylorMegill

    NYM Starting Pitcher #38

Tylor Megill was shelled for six runs over three innings on Saturday in a loss to the Cubs.

Megill’s fastball velocity was down noticeably in this outing, which undoubtedly led to him getting roughed up pretty good. Here’s an oversimplification: Megill leans heavily on his four-seam fastball, so any time he’s below 95 mph, which was the case in this one, he’s going to get hit pretty hard. He surrendered five hits, including a gargantuan solo shot to Christopher Morel, and only managed to complete three frames. He struck out six and also issued three walks. He’ll bring an underwhelming 4.81 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 43/16 K/BB ratio across 33 2/3 innings (seven starts) into a home outing next Saturday against the Astros.

  • Starling Marte was removed from Saturday’s game against the Cubs with right knee soreness.

MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo adds that Marte has been battling a right knee issue for the past couple weeks. There should be an update on his status at some point in the near future, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get a few days off moving forward in an effort to hopefully put the ongoing issue to bed.

  • KodaiSenga

    NYM Starting Pitcher #34

Kodai Senga (shoulder) will progress to facing hitters on Sunday in a live batting practice session.

It’ll be the first time Senga faces hitters since experiencing a setback in his rehabilitation process back in late May. The 31-year-old righty is still weeks away from a potential return to New York’s starting rotation and isn’t going to make his season debut until sometime after next month’s All-Star break.

  • DannyYoung

    NYM Relief Pitcher #81

Mets recalled LHP Danny Young from Triple-A Syracuse.

Young returns to the fold as part of New York’s relief corps ahead of Saturday’s game against the Cubs with reliable veteran Sean Reid-Foley landing back on the injured list with another right shoulder impingement. The 30-year-old southpaw has looked sharp in nine relief appearances this season for the Mets.

  • SeanReid-Foley

    NYM Relief Pitcher #71

Mets placed RHP Sean Reid-Foley on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 20, with a right shoulder impingement.

Reid-Foley missed time earlier this season with a right shoulder impingement and will likely be out until after next month’s All-Star break. The 28-year-old righty holds a strong 1.66 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 25/14 K/BB ratio across 21 2/3 innings (23 appearances) since making his season debut back in late April.

  • DukeEllis

    NYM Center Fielder #27

Mets claimed OF Duke Ellis off waivers from the White Sox.

Ellis will head to Triple-A Syracuse as extra organizational outfield depth for New York after being scooped up off waivers on Friday. The 26-year-old speedster stole four bases in eight games during a brief stint with the White Sox earlier this month. He has 34 thefts across 41 games this season in the upper minors.

  • GrantHartwig

    NYM Relief Pitcher #56

The Mets announced that Grant Hartwig underwent successful surgery on Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

The right-hander is expected to be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks while recovering from the procedure. The 26-year-old hurler has registered a 6.75 ERA over 6 2/3 innings out of the Mets’ bullpen this season.

  • J.D.Martinez

    NYM Right Fielder #28

J.D. Martinez delivered a three-run homer and an RBI single Friday as the Mets torched the Cubs 11-1.

Martinez is 11-for-27 with four homers, three doubles and 12 RBI in his last eight games. His current .870 OPS is practically a match for his career mark of .873, but it’s especially impressive given the current conditions, especially for a Mets hitter. Unfortunately, he’s probably going to lose his streak of five straight All-Star appearances, unless maybe the NL carries a third DH alongside Shohei Ohtani and Marcell Ozuna.

  • JoseQuintana

    NYM Starting Pitcher #62

Jose Quintana held the Cubs to an unearned run over 6 1/3 innings and struck out eight in Friday’s win.

After the Mets scored three runs in the top of the first, the Cubs, aided by a Mark Vientos error, appeared poised to come right back, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning. Alas, that’s not the way it worked out. Christopher Morel grounded into a run-scoring double play, and it proved to be the only run the Cubs would get all day. It’s the first time this season Quintana has gone without allowing an earned run. It’s also the second straight start in which he’s topped his season high for strikeouts; he hadn’t had more than four before fanning six Padres last week. Back-to-back victories have moved him to 3-5 with a 4.58 ERA.
