Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. I look forward to wearing jeans and sweatshirts, drinking a pumpkin latte, going to bonfires and corn mazes, feeling the chilly air at night, and of course eating anything and everything pumpkin.

This chocolate chip pumpkin bread recipe and these chocolate chip pumpkin cookies are two of my favorite things to bake once pumpkin spice season gets here.

Over the years I have changed up the pumpkin bread with different ingredients, but I always come back to this chocolate chip version.

Why You Should Make This Bread

Spices and mini chocolate chips make this moist pumpkin bread taste incredible. Here is why you are going to love this sweet quick bread too.

  • It's easy to make.
  • Moist & delicious.
  • Full of pumpkin flavor.
  • Loaded with chocolate.
  • Makes the kitchen smell so good as it bakes.

📋Key Ingredient Notes

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread Recipe - Inside BruCrew Life (2)

This moist pumpkin bread recipe uses simple pantry ingredients that you probably already have on hand. Make sure to stock up on canned pumpkin, so you can make this pumpkin bread all year long.

  • Sugar - A mixture of granulated and brown sugar sweetens the bread.
  • Oil - Adds a richness, tenderness, and moisture to quick breads.
  • Pumpkin Puree - Canned pumpkin is the easiest because it is available year round. If you make homemade pumpkin puree, make sure to drain and blot it before using.
  • Baking Soda - Provides the lift as the bread bakes.
  • Spices - A mixture of cinnamon and nutmeg gives this bread a delicious fall flavor.
  • Milk - Adds moisture to the batter.

Pumpkin Puree vs. Pumpkin Pie Mix

Pumpkin puree is made with 100% pure pumpkin. Pumpkin pie mix has sugar and spices added to it. Make sure you check your recipe, so you buy the correct one.

⏲️ How to make Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread Recipe - Inside BruCrew Life (3)

A loaf of this easy pumpkin chocolate chip bread is easy to make and only uses one bowl. Everything gets mixed together and then poured into a loaf pan. The hardest part is waiting for it to bake and cool before you can eat it.

Step One: Make the Pumpkin Batter

  1. Add the sugars, oil, and eggs to a large bowl.
  2. Mix until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the pumpkin puree and mix again.
  4. Stir together the flour, spices, salt, and baking soda. Slowly mix it into the batter with the milk.
  5. Gently stir in the mini chocolate chips.

Step Two: Bake the Pumpkin Bread

  1. Spoon the pumpkin batter into a greased and floured bread pan.
  2. Bake for 60 minutes or until done when a toothpick or skewer is inserted in the center of the loaf comes out with a few crumbs.
  3. Remove and cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Flip out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

Step Three: Add a Chocolate Topping

  1. Melt the chocolate chips and shortening in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds. Stir until melted and creamy. Heat 15-30 seconds longer if needed.
  2. Melt the white chips and shortening the same way. Spoon into a plastic baggie and cut one tip off.
  3. Spoon the melted chocolate on top of the bread. Go ahead and get it to the edge, but try to keep from pushing it over.
  4. Drizzle the white chocolate back and forth over the top from side to side.
  5. Immediately use a toothpick to drag it through the chocolate end to end. Work quickly because the chocolate will start to set up.

📖 Storage Recommendations

Once the bread has cooled completely, wrap it in plastic wrap and place on the counter for 4-5 days. If you want to keep it longer, place it in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

This easy pumpkin bread freezes very well. Wrap the cooled bread in 2 layers of plastic wrap and then place in a freezer safe bag or container.

Freeze for 2-3 months. To thaw the bread, unwrap it so the condensation does not make the pumpkin bread soggy. Add the chocolate right before serving.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips and Tricks

  • Do not over mix the pumpkin bread batter. Stir or beat just until the ingredients are mixed in. Over mixing can create a dense chewy bread.
  • Switch up the chocolate chips in your bread. I like using mini chocolate chips because they are smaller and do not sink as much. You can also use regular chocolate chips, semi sweet chips, white chips, or dark chips.
  • Make sure to grease and flour your bread pan. This will allow the bread to drop out easily after it finishes baking.
  • Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. This gives the bread time to finish baking and to set up before removing it from the pan.
  • Feel free to skip the extra chocolate topping, if you prefer. The bread is delicious with or without it.
  • Serve slices of this delicious fall bread with a steaming chocolate latte.

💭 Recipe FAQ's

What else can you add to pumpkin bread?

Chocolate chips are always a good choice for pumpkin bread. But if you do not like chocolate (the horrors), try adding 1 ½ cups of your favorite chopped nuts. You can also add seeds, raisins, pepitas, dried cranberries, or shredded coconut.

Why is my pumpkin bread gummy?

Double check your ingredients to make sure you did not miss something. The other factor that affects bread is measuring flour incorrectly. If you do not have enough flour to compensate for the moisture it can result in gummy bread. Check out our tutorial on How to Measure Flour.

How do you know when pumpkin bread is done?

The best way to test pumpkin bread is to insert a toothpick or skewer into the center of the bread. If it comes out with batter still on it, the bread needs to bake longer. If it comes out with moist crumbs, the bread is done.

What spices are best in pumpkin bread?

You can use any combination of fall spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, or all spice. If you do not want to use a mixture, you can always use 2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice.

This pumpkin bread is insanely gorgeous!! Do you have any detail pics of you doing the icing? I'm so afraid to mess it up!

Hi, Tara. I didn't take any pictures of doing the chocolate because it sets so quickly, so I couldn't stop to take pics. Let me set your mind at ease...it really is so easy to do. Just drizzle the two colors quickly and drag a toothpick through it. There is no right or wrong way to do it 🙂

FAQs

Why won t my pumpkin bread cook in the middle? ›

The oven temperature is off: Usually it's running too hot, and the outside looks brown before the center is baked through. But a low oven temperature can fool you too– you think you've baked long enough, but it's actually running 50 degrees too cool.

How do I keep my pumpkin bread from sinking in the middle? ›

If your oven isn't up to temperature consistently during the baking time, you may experience sunken cakes or loaves. Use an oven thermometer to gauge the accuracy of your oven. At the very least, try waiting 10 minutes after the oven has beeped to signify it has preheated before actually baking anything.

How long will homemade pumpkin bread last? ›

HOW DO I STORE PUMPKIN BREAD AND FOR HOW LONG? Place in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag for up to 4 days. To freeze, wrap in heavy-duty foil or plastic wrap and then place in a tightly sealed container or heavy-duty resealable freezer bag. Freeze for up to 2 months.

Why is my pumpkin bread so dry? ›

There are a number of reasons your pumpkin bread came out dry. It's possible the particular flour you used was extra “thirsty” for liquid. Try cutting the amount of flour, or adding more milk. It's also possible your oven was too hot, or you baked the pumpkin bread for too long.

Why is my bread done on the outside but not inside? ›

An oven that is running hotter than the set temperature will cook the outside of a loaf (and other foods) quicker than the inside. If you feel like this is an overall problem in your kitchen, test the oven temp with a thermometer.

What happens if you put too much pumpkin in pumpkin bread? ›

You might think you could overcome the lack of flavor by adding more pumpkin purée to your recipe, but you'd be mistaken: By the time you've added enough purée to taste it, your baked good would have a soggy texture on account of all that moisture.

Why is my pumpkin bread so heavy? ›

Pumpkin bread can become dense if there is not enough hydration or wet ingredients in the recipe. Another cause is overcooking the bread which can cause it to dry out. Remember, it's always easy to keep cooking if it isn't done but impossible to take cooking time back.

How to tell when pumpkin bread is done? ›

So, to know when pumpkin bread is done, look for the crack on the top of the bread, which is a tell-tale sign it's either done or close to being done. Then stick a skewer or toothpick into the center of the bread. If it comes out clean, it's ready to come out of the oven.

Why is my bread gummy in the middle? ›

Too much water can also produce a damp loaf. Try less water with your flour. Uneven heat in your oven can be the culprit – if you loaf is nicely golden on the outside but gummy or moist in the inside, it's baking too quickly on the outside. Trying reducing the temperature you're baking at and bake for a bit longer.

Should pumpkin bread be refrigerated after baking? ›

Once bread is cool, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Store Pumpkin Bread at room temperature for up to five days. After three days, you may want to place the Pumpkin Bread in the refrigerator to prolong its life. Pumpkin Bread can keep in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

How do you keep pumpkin bread from burning? ›

If the skewer doesn't come out cleanly, cover the top of the loaf with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning and return the pan to the oven to continue baking. This 10-second step isn't included in most recipes but it's a foolproof way to prevent your pumpkin bread from being overly soft, and underbaked on top.

Why does homemade bread not last long? ›

"Since homemade bread is preservative-free, it's likely to get stale within a couple of days after baking," says Jason Schreiber, food stylist and author of Fruit Cake: Recipes for the Curious Baker.

How can I make my bread more moist? ›

Fats keep your bread moist. If your loaf was too dry, try adding a tablespoon or two more oil next time you make it. Likewise, water does more than hydrate your dough. It helps yeast do its thing, activates gluten and determines the volume of your loaf—all crucial for the right results.

How do you add moisture to bread? ›

Add moisture.

Brush or spritz water all over the bread. Use more if the loaf is very dry and/or has a thick crust. Use less if the loaf has a thin crust or just needs a little pick-me-up. I've actually run the crust of a stale loaf directly under the faucet for a brief second without the bread getting soggy.

Why does my pumpkin bread stick to the pan? ›

Generally, bread sticking to the pan is caused by one of two things: the coating in the pan or the temperature the bread was baked. Bread baked too hot will turn out gummy and dense, and will not have that perfect spring you are looking for.

Why is my bread doughy in the middle? ›

Air circulating around the loaf allows the steam built up inside the bread to evaporate. If the bread is kept in its baking pan, it will become soggy and look and taste doughy. If the bread has not finished baking by the maximum time indicated in the recipe, the oven thermostat may be off.

Why is my pumpkin pie still wet in the middle? ›

Part of the challenge of baking this iconic holiday dessert is determining how to tell if your pumpkin pie is done. You have to get it right: If it's underdone, you have raw crust and gooey filling; if it's overdone, you have a cracked top and rubbery texture.

Why is the middle of my cornbread not cooked? ›

Cornbread, or any baked good, will fall in the middle if it is not completely baked, or if you add too much leavening, which causes it to rise more than the structure of the batter can sustain. Always use a tester inserted in the center of your cornbread to make sure it's done.
