As far as cobbler recipes go, this wonderful recipe is simple and straight forward – perfect even if it’s your first time making it.

Apple season is traditionally in the fall, but a variety of apples are available year-round so you can enjoy this easy dessert anytime.

What kind of apples make the best cobbler?

There are many different varieties of apples – not all are good for baking.

For the best cobbler, start with fresh apples and any combination of apples below.

I used a combination of Granny Smith and Honey Crisp apples blending sweet with tart apples.

  1. Granny Smith apples
  2. Jonagold
  3. Honey Crisp
  4. Braeburn
  5. Golden Delicious
  6. Gala apples

WHAT’S IN THIS EASY APPLE COBBLER?

Just a few basic grocery store ingredients – you may already have many of them.

  • apples
  • granulated sugar
  • cinnamon
  • all purpose flour
  • lemon juice and zest
  • salt
  • butter
  • baking powder
  • milk (2% used)
  • vanilla extract

How TO make Apple Cobbler:

Preheat the oven to 375° then slice the cold butter and add it to a 9 x 9 casserole dish.

Transfer the baking dish with the butter to the oven then let the butter melt while the oven preheats. Keep an eye on the butter and remove the dish as soon as the butter is melted.

Meanwhile peel, core and slice raw apples then add them to a medium bowl along with the sugar, cinnamon, flour, lemon zest, lemon juice and salt gently tossing to coat. A little lemon juice keeps the apples from turning brown.

In a separate bowl whisk the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and salt together then fold in the milk and vanilla stirring just until combined.

Add apples to the melted butter prepared baking dish then pour the batter over the top. It’s okay if all of the apple mixture isn’t completely covered.

Bake in the preheated 375° oven for 30-35 minutes or until the batter is a light golden brown then remove from the oven and serve warm.

NOTE: cooking time will vary with ovens and thickness of the apples.

How TO SERVE APPLE COBBLER:

My favorite way to eat this dessert is warm, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce. Whipped cream (instead of ice cream) or even a few nuts would be delicious too.

WHAT TO DO WITH LEFTOVERS:

Store leftovers in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator up to 3 days. Warm slightly in the microwave and eat.
